North American Roofing’s IKEA Project Recognized for Excellence in Energy Management

North American Roofing has been a pioneer in commercial and industrial roofing systems for more than three-and-a-half decades. Recently, one of our cutting-edge projects, the installation of 36,000 solar laminate panels on the IKEA distribution center in Perryville, Maryland, earned recognition by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing. The Center’s recent Excellence in Design competition focused on globally progressive roofing systems that exemplified long-term energy and environmental benefits.

In 2012, North American Roofing embarked on the largest solar roofing project in North America. It was an ambitious plan, designed to allow IKEA to generate all of its energy needs through integrated solar roofing. We installed more than 1.8 million square feet of solar roofing – a massive project equivalent in size to about 36 football fields. It took three highly trained North American Roofing crews about 8 weeks to complete the installation. When they were done, IKEA was producing more energy than it was consuming.

We’re pleased that The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing has recognized the IKEA project for excellence in energy management. This project has proved to be a valuable asset in the ongoing quest for sustainable roofing. Craig Silvertooth, the Center’s President, cited the IKEA project for “elevating the environmental performance of our world’s rooftops.”

Our commitment to environmentally sound roofing practices is stronger than ever. Brian Verble, North American Roofing’s CEO sums it up; “North American Roofing is creating a positive effect on our region’s economy and community, and the communities in which we work, especially when it is needed most.”
